The world needs over 2.5 billion dollars a year to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, a common agenda for action on people, planet and prosperity, endorsed and shared by all 193 member states of the United Nations. 

 

Delivering this unprecedented level of resources and achieving the ambitious targets set by Goals requires, more than ever, concerted public and private action. Sustainability has emerged as a powerful lever in the private sector to encourage 1) stronger alignment of companies of all sizes with sustainability targets and behaviors and 2) an increasing share of private capital flows directed towards sustainability aligned investments. 

 

Among others, environmental performance, good governance and social contribution have emerged as corporate priorities and as benchmarks and indicators closely monitored by asset managers and asset owners across the world. In fact, sustainable investment has increased an average of 30% in the last two years,  and it represents today over 30 trillion dollars, or  ⅓ of total investable assets. Post COVID-19 this trend will only continue to accelerate, influenced not only by stronger resilience of sustainability aligned companies, but also by increasing regulatory requirements, in the EU and beyond.
