Electoral November in the U.S.: Perspectives of the Midterm Elections

On November 2nd, we organized the seminar "US Electoral November: Perspectives on the Midterm Elections" in collaboration with CEOE.

The welcome remarks were given by Antonio Garamendi, CEOE President, and Jaime Malet, President of AmChamSpain, followed by a special connection with Jon Decker, White House Correspondent and Editor of Gray Television, who gave an excellent summary of the possible scenarios of the legislative elections taking place the following day in the United States.

The subsequent panel discussion, moderated by José Juan Ruiz, President of the Elcano Royal Institute, and composed by Carlota García, Principal Researcher on the United States at the Elcano Royal Institute, Amanda Mars, Director of Cinco Días and El País Economía, and Lorenzo Milá, Director of Objetivo Planeta on Canal24h TVE, had the opportunity to debate on other substantive issues. The speakers agreed that these elections will mark a before and after in the Biden Administration, especially considering that a possible Republican victory could make the President's job more difficult. In this regard, Amanda Mars emphasized that, in order to gain seats, the Republican campaign is focused on immigration, high inflation, and insecurity. Meanwhile, as Carlota García pointed out, Democrats are focused on the loss of rights and freedoms in Republican states, as well as on the figure of former President Donald Trump. They also discussed the global consequences the elections could have. According to Lorenzo Milá, "the high polarization of the elections shows the challenges facing American democracy and could give impetus to autocratic governments in other countries."

We thank all the speakers for their participation, as well as the official sponsors of AmChamSpain 2022 for making this event possible: BMS, Damm, Gilead, Nippon Gases, and Santander.
