On March 11, Josep Borrell, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, was the protagonist of the series Dialogues on Competitiveness, Productivity and Internationalization of the Spanish Economy of AmChamSpain.

During his speech, the Minister reviewed the Spanish economy and recalled that growth has been above the average of the European Union for 5 consecutive years. Borrell made reference to the favorable position of Spain in terms of trade, “we have a surplus in international trade and have witnessed a spectacular internationalization of our economy.”

The minister defended the importance of the relationship between the United States and Spain, especially for Spain’s prosperity and the world economy.

With regard to investment, despite the current territorial conflict that “has damaged the country’s image and withdrawn investment,” Spain is a healthy country, endowed with excellent infrastructures and infinite public security. For Borrell, “Spain is not a country where investor should be afraid” because it counts on a highly qualified workforce and it’s judicial system is no less secure than that of any other Western country.

The event concluded with a round of questions regarding the role that the European Union and Spain should play to strengthen its economy and international prestige. In this context, Borrell emphasized the need to take advantage of the investment opportunities presented by developing countries and “be at the level of what the world expects from a country like Spain.”
